Vijender Singh Beniwal Biography


Vijender Singh Beniwal (born October 29 1985), better known as Vijender Singh is an Indian professional boxer and current WBO Super Middleweight Champion Asia Pacific Kaluwas, Bhiwani district in Haryana. He was educated in his village, after which he received a bachelor's degree from a local university in Bhiwani. He practiced boxing at the Bhiwani Boxing Club where coach Jagdish Singh recognized his talent and encouraged him to take up boxing. It was driven by the Indian boxing coach Gurbaksh Singh Sandhu.

Having won medals in different competitions at national level, Vijender was chosen to train and compete in several international competitions such as the Athens Summer Olympics in 2004 and the Commonwealth Games in 2006. In the Asian Games Doha 2006, he won the bronze medal after losing the semi-final match against Bakhtiyar Artayev of Kazakhstan. During the Summer Olympics in 2008 in Beijing, he defeated Carlos Góngora of Ecuador 9-4 in the quarterfinals that guarand a medal, the first Olympic bronze medal for an Indian boxer.


After the win, Vijender has received a number of awards, including the highest sports award of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award-India and Padma Shri, the fourth civilian honor. In 2009, he participated in boxing championship of the world amateurs where he won the bronze medal. In the same year, the International Boxing Association (AIBA) announced Vijender as the senior boxer in its annual list of the middleweight category with 2800 points.
